Two New Banjos

posted Friday, 29 July 2005
I was riding home from the library when I saw a handmade sign outside a home that said, "Banjos and 2 Acustics for sale".  I immediately stopped in and a woman answered.  The instruments were her sons and he came out and showed them to me.  They were old so I wanted them even if I had never heard of the brand.  One was a five string Kay and the other was a four string Mayfair.

I offered him $75 for both and he accepted.  I had a heck of a time getting them home with the bicycle but it was worth it.  I tuned up the five string and it sounded great.

Later I went onto the online banjo forum Banjo Hangout and asked about them.  This is what I was told.

That's a reasonable price. I'd probably have bought 'em. Both, BTW, are Asian-made, some distributor having bought the Kay name. "Mayfair" was the name of an old Epiphone model--again, it's a distributor's name.                       Bill Rogers

I'm very happy with my purchase and my music room is really starting to shape up.  One nice thing is I'll have a nice beater banjo to take to the campgrounds.
