My wife has been hinting for a long time that our daughter needed a pet. I am not an animal person. I can't stand dogs and barely tolerate cats

.
Lately the talk became serious about getting a cat so the wife looked on the internet and found a bunch of prospects. The breeds they liked were the Main Coon and Turkish Van. Any time they tried to get me involved in the discussion I explained that I heard they tasted like chicken.
This weekend we decided to get serious and look at a few. The wife decided the responsible thing was to go to the Animal Protective League and see what was available. I was surprised to see that the Lorain County APL was renamed to
The Friendship Animal Protective League. It was immediately obvious that they are in financial need and their newsletter talked about the hard times they are having.
We looked at all the cats and kittens and one stood out. This one had some Turkish Van in it and the daughter fell for it. She spent a lot of time with it and we decided to have her sleep on it. We went back the next day and after playing with it for a while we brought it home.
I didn't know it but they charge $65 for the adoption of the cat. Plus you have to fill out a questionnaire that threatens to fine you $500 if you don't take care of your pet. One of the questions was how much you thought your cat would cost to take care of for a year. The wife said $400 and I said at least $600. She scoffed but when we left there we immediately went to the store and spent $150 buying a litter box. litter, cat toys, food and assorted kitty schtuff.
When we got home we found that the colors of the cat matched our new house perfectly. The daughter is very happy and I have to admit that the cat belongs here. It feels good to rescue an animal from the shelter.
