Standing Stones and Heavy Lifting

posted Saturday, 24 March 2007

Nothing fascinates me more than menhirs , dolmen and stone circles .  My favorite site on the internet is Stone Pages.  The photographs on the site are the best I've seen.  These megaliths engage me for a number of reasons.  The amount of effort needed to create them must have been incredible.  Most importantly they have survived thousands of years.  I can't imagine a large stone surviving here in America for very long.  I'm sure a Walmart would be in it's place to create jobs and increase the tax base.

My family settled in Sheffield Village, Ohio in 1846 and while doing research of the area I found a map from 1870.   The map shows numerous Indian Mounds that I've been told were created by The Hopewell Indians along The French Creek and The Black River .  All of them are gone now although you can still find a large number of Native American artifacts in the area if you have an eye for it.

There is a man on the route who walks the park and has found hundreds of artifacts and  petroglyphs .  He has offered to take me on one of his hikes but I haven't found the time.  When I retire I will be far busier than I am now.

The real reason for this post is a video that I came across on YouTube.    Wally Wallington lives in Michigan and he moves incredibly large weights by himself. He moves giant rocks and even a barn. It's astonishing the simplicity and ingenuity of what he does.  Take a look and I think you'll be impressed.
