Roy Book Binder: The Concert

posted Sunday, 2 October 2005
Went to the Roy Book Binder concert tonight at Kent Stage in downtown Kent, Ohio. As usual I was running late along with the added anxiety of going all the way to Kent. Being the son of an agoraphobic I had printed out maps from both MapQuest and Google Maps, even though I'd been there many times before.

My buddy Tom was volunteering there so he had some choice seats saved for us. I made it with fifteen minutes to spare and was surprised to see one of the guys from my first time at The Fur Peace Ranch. We were both in Roy's class and helped each other out a lot.

When I walked in Roy was in the lobby with his wife Nancy selling cds. He remembered me and I got a quick picture. I bought his latest cd, Live at the Fur Peace Station and had him sign it. Then I found my buddy Tom and we talked about mandolins, folk music and the upcoming Kent State Folk Festival.

The show started with Roy on a dark stage on a stool with a spotlight on him. He seemed a little tired but played great guitar. He is nearing the end of his tour as Roy takes the winter off and stays in Florida with his wife. I've seen his show so many times that I know all of his songs by heart. He made a few minor mistakes and then blew the lyrics big time in an old Pink Anderson song, I Got Mine. I'm sure no one noticed the minor mistakes, only a fanatic like me would pick up on them. On one song he looked at me and used my name in the song. He did the same thing at the concert I saw him at in Pomeroy, Ohio.

He performed many of my favorites like Full Go Round, CC & O Blues and Electricity. After the show I saw him in the lobby and he said, "I said your name in that song, did you hear it?" I told him I did and I appreciated it. He told me to come back to the Ranch and show him what I've learned. I told him I would.

On the way home I listed to his new cd. It's typical fare for Roy, seventeen songs and a ton of stories. It was really nice to hear him do a few Dave Van Ronk songs. I just missed seeing Dave at the Philly Folk Festival a years ago.

Overall the concert was excellent and the cd is great. The cd captures Roy in concert and feels very intimate.  It's interesting to compare this to his first live cd, Don't Start Me Talking.  In that one his stories were much longer.  Here the stories set up the songs a lot more and will allow the cd to stand up better under repeated listenings.
