I've been trying to learn clawhammer banjo on my own and was coming along slowly but well. A couple week
s ago some on a website called The Banjo Hangout put up a post that they were giving lessons in North East Ohio. I popped him an email and set up a meeting. He only lived about twenty miles from me and we made plans to meet. Since I was raised by an agoraphobic I had to seriously plan the trip and left with plenty of time to get there.
The drive took me through small towns like Lester, Erhart and Mallet Creek. I ended up getting lost and had to call him from my cell phone. It's embarrassing having a job where I find addresses and get lost everywhere I go.
I finally got to his house and he was incredibly friendly. First thing he checked out my banjo to make sure it was playable and then checked out what I knew. Thanks to Patrick Costello I had all of the basics down with no bad habits and my new instructor seemed pleased.
We spent the hour getting to know each other and decided on a plan. He gave me some ideas of music to listen to and I left happy and excited. With Ron's help I know I can get where I want to go.
It was on Rod's suggestion that I took my father-in-law to the jam in Homeville. Rod was there and played every song that I could think of to request. It's going to be fun.
