I spent a lot of time working on the banjo and the guitar. One of the things I did was spend some time with my father-in-law, Stephen. He's a multi-instrumentalist who played mandolin in the Navy back in the forties. He's the one that got me started on the banjo and really kick started my playing of music. I always had the love but not always the drive. Thanks Stephen!
One day I stopped by and we played a little music on his mandolins. He is playing a Docy mandolin that his uncle made and I'm playing his old Martin pancake mandolin that he won in a card game while in the Navy during WWII. Notice in the picture that he is giving me
the look that means I'm not playing well. We did have a good time though. I need to get over there more often, it's always fun.
A little more about the Docy mandolin. Stephen's uncle, James Docy died at age 86 after producing over 3,000 mandolins. His mandolins aren't the fanciest but they get the job done. I see them on Ebay every once in a while and when I see one to my liking I'm going to pick it up.
