Katy Moffat

posted Saturday, 7 January 2006
A few days ago I got a phone call from my buddy Tom.  As usual he had won tickets to a local concert.  This time it was for Katy Moffat at The Beachland Ballroom.

I've seen Katy twice before but never in a real concert setting.  Both times were at House Concerts in Wadsworth.  If you've never been to a house concert you owe it to yourself to go to one soon.  Usually an artist puts on a show in a living room with 20 - 30 people sitting around.  It's very informal and allows the artist to try out new things and make a few extra bucks.

If you'd like more info on house concerts click HERE.

Katy is a very dynamic performer who plays here guitar almost in a clawhammer/frailing style using banjo picks on her right hand.  At the last house concert, back in 2001, she had just released an album called Cowboy Girl and did some powerful songs that really impressed me.  Her version of John Hardy was rough and raucous.  In nearly every song someone died but it wasn't until the horse died in one of the songs that it got to my daughter.  She really bawled and Katy made some comments about it.

The show at The Beachland was very different.  I was surprised to see it was Standing Room Only.  Tom had secured a perfect table right in front of the stage and I quickly got a couple pints of Guinness.

In a concert setting she comes alive.  She played the guitar with a real ferocity and growled out some of the songs.  Then she would tone it down and fingerpick a beautiful song like Walkin' On The Moon.  My friend Sally couldn't make it so I bought the latest album compact disc for her.  It was a treat to listen to in on the way home.

Guinness, good friends and a couple hours of great music.  I really can't ask for much more than that.  There are a lot of great artists coming to town and I'm hoping to see as many as possible.
